Frederik advises on regulatory issues, particularly in the banking and insurance sector, and has assisted numerous insurers, banks, and financial service providers on a wide range of regulatory matters. Frederik is also counselling a range of clients on Brexit-related questions.


Earlier in his career, Frederik was seconded to the European Financial Markets Lawyers Group/European Central Bank.


Frederik is ranked as a leading individual in Chambers Europe (Banking & Finance: Regulatory - Germany) and in JUVE (insurance supervisory law).

Frederik has led on, or been a key adviser in, many major matters and transactions.  Those that can be disclosed include advising:

  •  AXA on the sale of Pro bAV Pensionskasse to Frankfurter Leben-Group
  • Aviva Life on the transfer of the businesses of Friends Life to Aviva Life & Pensions UK (such transfer included a significant German back-book)
  • Montagu Private Equity on the acquisition of Universal-Investment 
  • Athene Holding on the acquisition of Delta Lloyd Deutschland
  • Helvetia Holding on its public takeover of Nationale Suisse
  • Erste Abwicklungsanstalt (EAA) on the restructuring and winding-up of WestLB, including the takeover of assets and liabilities each valued in excess of €160bn and the sale of Westdeutsche ImmobilienBank to Aareal Bank
  • Swiss Re in relation to the reorganisation of its European reinsurance business
  • Lloyds Banking Group on the sale of Heidelberger Leben
  • Deutsche Börse on the planned merger with NYSE Euronext and on its acquisition of Eurex
  • Citibank on the sale of its German retail banking business
  • Several German banks (including Landesbank Sachsen, Bayerische Landesbank, IKB and Hypo Real Estate) on regulatory aspects in relation to risk shields established in the context of the financial crisis

Education and qualifications

Frederik studied law at the University of Göttingen and modern history at Keble College, University of Oxford. He holds a doctorate in law from Humboldt University, Berlin.
